All the cringe of the eighties with none of the talent. You’d wake up in the morning with your greasy sun-in hair, throw on a flannel shirt, a pair of light blue baggy or ripped jeans, clip on the ol’ wallet chain, and slip into your green colored Doc Martens. And as you slammed your Pogs and snapped your Slap Bracelet, you might have been listening to one of these… (Page me when you’re done enjoying the tunes.)

Crazy Things People Do With Their Voices

This was such a fun article to write! Medicine is undergoing a pivotal shift; from the assumption that drugs and diseases work the same in all human beings, to medical issues being diagnosed and treated specific to DNA profiles. What the future holds, according to a growing number of scientists and researchers, is a new age of medical therapy governed not by cell, tissue and organ replacements but by early diagnosis and individualized drug treatments. Here are some cool medical tech advancements vastly changing the world of medicine as we know it. Read more »

How The Internet Affects Your Brain

A look at some of the ways the Internet is shaping the way we read, research, multi-task and store information.

Like most things, the Internet has its good and its dark side. And, considering the pervasiveness of the Internet in society, it is certainly having an effect on our brains. After all, everything we do affects our brain. Though up until the 1980’s, it was universally believed that the steam engine was the foremost invention of the Industrial Revolution, technology and science historian, Lewis Mumford, had long before proposed that that clock was in fact the key machine of the modern Industrial age. And, just as people began operating and planning according to seconds and minutes, in the age of the internet, we are rewiring our “plastic” brain to function more and more like computers. Processing, decoding and storing floods of information at a rate faster than we ever have before, our brains are becoming highly adapted to taking on scores of tasks at once. Read more »

How The Internet is Muscling in on Hollywood

We stream movies and TV shows for free and Hollywood hates it. Here's a look at the fierce competition between the Internet and the Hollywood machine.

Hollywood has a thorn in its side and it’s only getting deeper. The Internet is fundamentally changing the film industry as we know it. People are watching movies and TV shows for free online; the Internet is eating into TV watching more and more each year; Web series’ are in increasing demand and challenging traditional television networks; and what’s more, regular folks are creating their own web videos and broadcasting themselves on sites like YouTube. Read more »

Controversial Cyber Laws Around The World

If you thought Internet censorship laws in China were bad, get ready for some other highly controversial cyber laws around the world, including right here in North America...

With cybercrime now surpassing illegal drug trafficking as a criminal moneymaker, netizens of the world may be paying the price in order to stop it. Cool or creepy?

To Gordon Bell and Jimmy Gemmell it’s inevitable. They call it the Total Recall Revolution and in many ways it’s already begun. Computer enhanced personal memory. The ability to remember every moment exactly the way it was. Never forget anything. We don’t realize it but every time we Google, take a picture, share photos via Facebook, update our Twitter accounts, we are recording our lives electronically. Read more »

Things The 80's Child Shouldn't Have Thrown Out

Slap bracelets, scrunchies and stirrups oh my! A list of all the things us 80's kids had in our closet, that American Apparel is ripping off... HARD.

Growing up, I remember going through my mother’s old pictures and seeing those amazing vintage shades, high-waisted bell-bottoms, beautiful long hippie dresses and strappy Jesus sandals she used to wear, pleading “Why Mom? Why? Why did you give it all away?” Now, that I’m all grown up, I walk into a store like American Apparel and wonder if they went fishing through my give-away bags when I was a kid in the 80’s. When it comes to fashion, everything comes back in cycles. What’s “new” is really just an evolution and tweak of what’s past. Here’s a post for all you 80’s kids who like me, are probably regretting all those e-Bay opportunities you must have missed seeing hipsters strut around in our old gear.

A first taste at wine appreciation and the sensual characteristics behind it...

Had I relied on the taste of my father’s home-made wine while growing up, I might still think that wine was supposed to be carbonated. and Daffy, it’s no wonder ducks have been central characters in cartoons and stories. However between the periods of 1985-1997, a fascinating phenomenon occurred and all of a sudden duck shows were popping up everywhere, giving rise to what some are calling the Duck Boom. Vampire ducks, Hockey ducks, Billionaire ducks, Batman/Shadow-wannabe ducks… Ducks seemed to be the perfect ingredient for a hit series. Read more »

How To Hide Being Hung Over At Work

<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; stealing traffic cones; the sense of accomplishment from picking someone up a on a Tuesday night… People just love to go out and party like it’s their last night to live and since the Mayan calendar predicts an apocalypse in 2012 anyway, there really wouldn’t be any point in letting your liver off easy. Read more »

How To Have The Most Balanced Diet Using Only Microwavable Food

<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; Zapping away hours of time spent either famished or slaving away cooking, this radiation-emitting ‘wonder’ is the fast and easy answer to all your hunger needs.
But microwavable food isn’t just about convenience; it’s a way of life. You can get all your essential nutrients in just one sitting, it gives you more time to spend doing the things you love [like drunk dialing and Mario Kart], and the greatest part about it, it tastes so much better than the foods “health experts” call “nutritious”. Read more »

More interesting quotes...

I found this summarized quite accurately, my fear of feeling "normal" and in control of my thoughts and feelings...

"[...] As someone who wanted to write, I superstitiously believed that psychological knots in the mind were best left tangled. It had been a long day. Not bad, just long. I got stood up, again. That could sound bad, but there was something else pre-occupying my mind. I had just written an article on how to overcome writer’s block. Not that I had any founded experience to base it on. It was done more to help me than anyone else. But the whole day kind of had me feeling inspired. That hadn’t happened in a while.

I got home, eager to raid the fridge. I had gone grocery shopping two days prior, so I was finally stocked up, prepared to make myself a delicious home-cooked meal, accompanied bya bottle of wine. It was going to be great. Before deciding what to make, I started snacking; a bit of chocolate mousse, a handful of blackberries, a couple of earth cherries, and some dry cereal. Suddenly, out of the corner of my eye, I saw something scatter quickly behind the broom. I panicked.

“Ohmagod, ohmagod, ohmagod, OH MY GOD!!!!!!! It’s a MOUSE!!”

I didn’t know what to do. I ran in circles in the kitchen and then bolted toward my room down the hall.

“Shit. My phone!”

I ran back to the kitchen, but was so blinded by fear that I couldn’t see anything anymore. I couldn’t find my phone (which was of course, right under my nose). I snapped out of it momentarily, saw my phone, grabbed it, and ran into my room. I slammed the door behind me, leaped onto my bed and called my best friend Mike immediately.

“Hello?”

“Mike! There’s a mouse. There’s a mouse in my house!”

“Pff--HAHAHAHAHAHA!”

I laughed too.

Then I saw the tiny, little dark creature put its nose under my door…

“AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!”

It ran away.

“Mike, it’s trying to come into my room”

He continues to laugh.

“What the hell do I do? I can’t leave my room. I know I’m bigger than it but I am clearly more afraid of it than it is of me. He can smell my fear. He’s going to crawl all over my body and eat me alive!”

“Mary, you have to leave your room. It won’t hurt you.”

“AAAAAAHHHHHHHH!”

“What?”

“He tried to come in again!”

“Is he in your room?”

“No I think my screech scared him off…What’s up with this fearless mouse anyway? Look, I’ll call you back. I need to find someone who can save me right now.”

I called my friend Hannah. She lived sort of close.

“Han! There’s a mouse in my house!”

She burst out laughing.

“I know, I know. It’s ridiculous, but I’m standing on top of my bed and the mouse keeps trying to come into my room. I’ve been shrieking and throwing pens at my door to scare it off, but now I’m out of pens and I don’t know what to do!”

“Mare, go put some boots on. This actually happened to me a few weeks ago and I freaked out as much as you. I called my father and asked him to get rid of it…”

The mouse pokes his head in again…

“AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!”

It runs away.

Hannah is cracked up.

“Mary, just go get your boots, get a broom, and try to shoo the mouse out.”

“Oh god…. Okay… I can’t just stay in my room all night, right? How am I going to sleep here? I feel like he’ll crawl into bed with me. Okay. I need to get my boots. I’m going to do it.”

I put one foot on the ground.

“AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH”

Now it had actually come into my room but again, it ran out.

“Why is he so brave? He should be the one hiding in a corner… Meanwhile, here I am acting like the mouse.”

“It’s good to know your neighbours wouldn’t even come up to see if you were alright after all that screaming.”

“Seriously, right?”

I jumped off my bed and stomped really loudly toward my door in a cold sweat. Now even the dust balls started looking like the little critter, so I just kept screaming until I reached my door. I opened it briskly, and continued to stomp until I was out the door of my apartment. I nearly locked myself out, worried it was trying to follow me.

Once my boots were on, I marched wimply back in, and ran to get the broom. No word could describe me better in that moment than pathetic; standing there with my ridiculous battle armour.

“Han, I think I’m going to leave the house.”

“Mare, you can’t let the mouse take over your house.”

“Oh yes I can. This is me, proclaiming my defeat. You win, Mouse.”

I took my jacket and went over to my friend Marge’s.

The next day, I convinced Marge to come over.

As I opened the door, I peeked my head through to see if he was around. I was actually quite surprised he hadn’t come to greet me.

“Maybe he found his way back out” Marge said.

“I don’t think so Margie. He’s probably under my bed making babies.”

We walked into the house and snooped around for a bit, but there was no sign of him.

“He’s definitely somewhere. He’s probably just waiting to see my feet to make his move.”

We went about our morning; made some food, coffee.

Then, as I walked down the hall, out creeped the mouse from the radiator, but this time it didn’t scatter away when I screamed. It collapsed.

“Marge! Marge! The mouse!”

We didn’t want to hurt him. He was small and so frail; just a little baby.

Marge took the old shoe box I had left out to create my very own humanitarian mouse trap. She scooped him up and covered his shaking body in paper towel.

“He’s so cute!” Marge said as she tried to feed him butter from her finger.

But the mouse just convulsed in what were probably his last breaths.

I didn’t want him to die. This was all becoming very, very sad. I took a deep breath as I opened the box. There he was, lying in pain, as I looked into his eyes and saw the innocence. Such a young organism, left on its own, only hoping to find protection from a cruel winter. Here I was staring into the face of death, feeling utterly embarrassed by the hissy fit I had just put up.

“Margie, how do we save him?”

“I don’t know. Let’s put some milk on this cloth and see if he’ll drink it.”

The mouse lay in his shoebox twitching, and all I could feel was guilt.

“Please don’t die mouse. Marge will take you home.”

But the mouse’s end had come. There was nothing else we could do.

Accidents May Happen... part I

<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt;
By Mary Montserrat-Howlett

Too many people sit around thinking their life is uneventful, or that only bad things happen to them. I know this because I have been one of those people. Tired of my job, tired of my life, I saw no end to quotidian monotony and for a while, it seemed the only spice that was being added to my day, was bad luck. I was quite bitter for a long time; but staying in a bad situation only perpetuated the pessimism.

Eventually, the bitterness caught up to me. I got tired of my droopy, negative way of thinking. I got sick of disappointing others, and most of all, disappointing myself. So, I quit my job, I took the material I was getting from my “crappy” daily life and turned everything happening to me, into another element of who I was: a human being who makes mistakes and accepts those mistakes as part of who they are.

Laughing at myself and the situations I got into, began to get me through a lot of rough patches; it even produced a little wisdom. Adding a little positivity to events that initially seemed awful, helped me construct a more optimistic outlook on life overall. Sure, the accidents still happened, but changing the way I reacted to them, became one of the most mind-altering moves I’d ever made.

If all I do by writing this column is compel some people not to feel too bad about something they’ve said or done, I think I’ve done my job.

Make Yourself Feel Better

There is nothing worse than wallowing in self-pity. But hey, we all do it at some point. And the truth is, sometimes it feels great. Depressions can be comforting for a while, but you can’t feel rotten forever, so you have to find a way to pick yourself up. I started by laughing at the bad things that were occurring the worse my day got.

Beginning as soon as I woke up, I could expect a good bang on the knee as I rose out of bed. It would hurt a lot, but instead of giving into the pain and allowing this incident to delegate how my day would go, I embraced my morning clumsiness and made a joke of it. “I’m so glad I have this new bruise. I can’t wait to see all the colours it will turn over the next six months.”

Sarcasm can be a wonderful technique of making yourself laugh. You don’t really need anyone else around to make a sarcastic remark and even in their presence, this is one pleasure that is enjoyed most, alone. You develop a close bond with yourself when you can laugh together.

Accidents May Happen

I’ve come to notice that accidents happen when you most expect them. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve know I was going to drop something, hurt myself or say the wrong thing. I think it’s just something you feel in your gut, but you never seem to react quickly enough to avoid it. Mostly, you just end up closing your eyes and hoping for a miracle.

Having been a waitress for eight years, I had become somewhat of an expert at high intensity disasters. Spilling an entire glass of red wine all over a woman and her white fur coat; sneezing on a customer; laughing at something a customer said when it wasn’t a joke…these were just parts of a larger picture.

I was serving a table of two gentlemen once. They ordered a nice bottle of Ripasso, (courteously offering a glass to another waitress), two New York-cut steaks for dinner, and appetizers to start. They were regulars, but I had never served them before. They usually preferred to be served by one of our more exotic looking waitresses, Christina. The men were in their late 20’s, acted like they were 40, but looked no older than 15, give or take a few years.

I ended up getting a lot of tables at once. Admittedly, the gentlemen weren’t my priority. I kept forgetting things they asked for, not clearing plates fast enough; not refilling their wine and water every time they had less then two ounces in their glasses.

When the rush died down, I was standing at the bar waiting for the drinks I had to bring to a table. But I could feel something stuck in my teeth. I knew I had to get whatever was in there, out, before going to any tables. So, I took a toothpick and began picking at the unwanted food… I know it is rather disgusting to do when you are serving people food. In my defense though, I did go wash my hands thoroughly, at the sink behind the bar, right after.

Only ten minutes later, one of my manager’s took me aside to tell me I couldn’t serve the gentlemen anymore. Apparently they saw me picking my teeth and were incredibly repulsed. They asked to be served by another waitress. I stopped breathing for a second. But when my manager looked at my face, she couldn’t help herself and we both burst out laughing, forced to run to the kitchen not to be seen.

Lessons Learned

Though I could have gotten into a lot of trouble for having a customer demand to be served by someone else, the fact that I would even do something like pick my teeth in front of everyone and not realize how inappropriate that was, was the sincere touch of innocence and humility that saved me from any problems with my superiors.

I could worry about what those guys thought of me and my etiquette. I could worry about what people would think just reading this story. But what I know is, that it isn’t even worth a moment of my time to try and conform to other people’s expectations, especially, regarding things that don’t matter to me. Living your life as a satisfied, happier individual is rooted entirely on how well you accept yourself and others.

I’ve gotten myself into trouble, and this story is just the tip of the iceberg.
